Quality in Craftsmanship

Wood for our dulcimers is carefully chosen, cut, grain-matched and finished by one craftsperson at a time. As a result, each instrument evolves its own personality. Black Walnut,  Sassafras, Cherry, Poplar, Sitka and Engleman Spruce, Douglas Fir and Aromatic Cedar, lend their individual voices. From these and other distinctive woods, our instrument makers select a piece that shows off the beauty of the tree and then begin the process of creating. We feature many sustainable harvest domestic hardwoods, making sure that our wood suppliers are working in harmony with nature to ensure Mother Earth's good health.

Our solid wood dulcimer backs and tops are made with two pieces of mirror image bookmatched wood. Sides are matched for color and grain. Scroll heads are carefully crafted from solid wood. We use micarta for bridges and nuts. Hard as ivory, micarta leaves nature alone. We precisely place nickel silver frets on the fretboards. High-quality geared machines keep these four-stringed dulcimers in tune. Each decorative sound hole is cut by hand. Our trademark vine patterns and others designed by master luthier Donna Ford are copied by many imitators but Donna's artistry of soundhole design and production remains unmatched in the craft. Why settle for an imitation when our unique originals are so affordable?

The final step before releasing an instrument for sale is the finishing processs. Instead of environmentally harmful spray lacquers, we spend a little extra time handrubbing the wood with a special oil that buffs to a warm luster and a hard finish or use the new non toxic water based lacquers. Quality and crafsmanship will always be of the highest importance for all of our master luthiers.
